More Delays for Angels Flight
News Brief
The president of the non-profit Angels Flight Railway Foundation said last week that the tiny funicular that connects Bunker Hill to the Historic Core would not reopen at the end of summer, as he stated at a press conference in January. John Welborne, who has, as a volunteer, helmed the effort to get the train running since it closed following a fatal accident in February 2001, said he is still waiting on the installation of a new drive system. Welborne said the manufacturing of the system - part of the railway's $2.6-million renovation - could be complete by October and the railroad would open "definitely by December." He said he is in talks with the California Public Utilities Commission, which must approve the train and its safety features before it reopens. The project has been delayed for years and multiple announced reopening dates have not been met.
