The Braves and Marlins Challenge the Dodgers at Home

Monday, July 7, 7:10 p.m.; Tuesday, July 8, 7:10 p.m.; Wednesday, July 9, 7:10 p.m.: The Dodgers down-and-up campaign continues against the Atlanta Braves, the team for which outfielder Andruw Jones played 12 seasons, and where he won 10 National League Gold Glove awards. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, his ineffectiveness at the plate, combined with an injury, has meant that Jones so far this year is a big-budget bust. But despite the fact few things have worked for the Blue Crew's offense this year, they remain within striking distance of first-place Arizona. Baseball can be a wacky game.

Thursday, July 10, 7:10 p.m.; Friday, July 11, 7:40 p.m.; Saturday, July 12, 7:10 p.m.; Sunday, July 13, 1:10 p.m.: The Florida Marlins visit the Dodgers for a four-game series, and pitcher Brad Penny will face his old team. Both clubs have surprised people this year: The fish, expected earlier in the season to flounder, are contending in the National League East, while the Dodgers, anticipated by many to challenge by virtue of their apparently solid starting pitching, remain well under .500. One of the few bright spots is catcher Russell Martin, who is quietly stringing together another solid year.

Wednesday, July 9, 7:30 p.m.: The first-place Sparks are off to a hot start and this week host the Houston Comets. The club then takes its show on the road to play at the Sacramento Monarchs (July 10) and the Seattle Storm (July 12), both Western Conference rivals. Forward DeLisha Williams-Jones is fitting nicely alongside Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker as the club attempts to form the WNBA's version of a three-headed monster.
