The Union Rescue Mission on San Pedro Street last week announced that as of April 3 it will close its shelter for single women and divert those funds to a more pressing need-mothers with children.
The loss of about 110 beds for single women sparked protest among the homeless and their advocates, but the mission's president, Warren Curry, has said the decision will free up $320,000. The mission's staff will continue to offer food, counseling and other services to single women, and help them find new shelters.
