DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - The Museum of Contemporary Art wants to reach young audiences by teaching them about breaking the rules.
MOCA this week announced the publication of a children’s book about contemporary art. With Breaking the Rules: What is Contemporary Art?, for ages 8-12, museum officials hope to encourage young audiences to think about what art is and how it can be made and interpreted.
The book was written by Susan Goldman Rubin, who has penned more than 45 titles aimed at young people. Her 64-page MOCA book looks at some of the works in the museum; it offers an introduction to 25 contemporary artists whose pieces are in the institution’s permanent collection.
The book, on sale at all MOCA store locations or online at moca.org, features artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Victor Estrada, Ed Ruscha and Alighiero Boetti. It includes reproductions of paintings, sculpture, photography and installations.
