DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - Three years after closing a Downtown store, Brooks Brothers is returning. Blue signs with gold writing outside the Jonathan Club at 545 S. Figueroa St. identify the space as the future home of the men’s retailer, with an opening this spring.
Brooks Brothers and Jonathan Club officials did not return calls for comment. A Downtown Brooks Brothers at 604 S. Figueroa St. closed in March 2010 after 20 years in business. At that time Claudio Del Vecchio, the chairman and CEO of New York-based Brooks Brothers, said the store was shuttered because of delays in developer Related Cos. Grand Avenue project. The company had intended to open an 11,000-square-foot location there. Brooks Brothers has a long history in Downtown, going back to 1939 with the opening of a shop in the Pacific Mutual building at 523 W. Sixth St. The store moved to the Roosevelt building on Seventh Street in the mid ’40s before shifting to the Brockman Building, which now houses the Bottega Louie restaurant, in 1965.
